AED707 - Intro to Real-Time DSP Programming & System Design

This course provides a hands-on introduction to embedded DSP development using a general purpose software-programmable DSP processor (Texas Instruments? TMS320VC5510). Basic concepts in DSP (Digital Signal Processing) will be reviewed using the MATLAB programming environment. Emphasis will also be placed on choosing and applying Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog converters to achieve the highest resolution for the application.

AED709 - Safety Certification and Approvals

This course is divided into two sections, which will be presented in tandem. The first section covers the fundamentals of standards and regulations, conformity assessment, various certification agencies, and regional, national and global standards and regulations. The process of developing a standard will be explained in detail, using as an example Canadian Standards Association, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the ISO (International Standards Organization). The second section of this course covers in detail an actual application of the safety standards for product assessment, testing and approval. The principal elements of basic electrical safety, such as electric shock and fire hazard, will be demonstrated and explained in a laboratory environment.

AED712 - 3G and 4G Wireless Communication Systems

This subject provides students with both conceptual and practical understanding of modern wireless communications, with emphasis on the characteristics of third and fourth generation cellular systems. A thorough review of relevant fundamental principles, as well as key stages in the evolution of current technology, are provided. An introduction to the third generation systems such as UMTS and cdma2000, and their related technology, is also included in this course.  Principles are applied through the use of both real and simulated wireless system examples, including vector dsignal and protocol analysis of cellular signals.
