Subject Title
Safety Certification and Approvals

Subject Description
This course is divided into two sections, which will be presented in tandem. The first section covers the fundamentals of standards and regulations, conformity assessment, various certification agencies, and regional, national and global standards and regulations. The process of developing a standard will be explained in detail, using as an example Canadian Standards Association, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the ISO (International Standards Organization). The second section of this course covers in detail an actual application of the safety standards for product assessment, testing and approval. The principal elements of basic electrical safety, such as electric shock and fire hazard, will be demonstrated and explained in a laboratory environment.

Credit Status
One subject credit in the Electro Mechanical Design and the Applied Electronic Design Post Diploma program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

A. General Objectives:
1. Understand the reason for the existence of standards and regulations. Know that the standards are presented in technical language that manufacturers around the world use to create goods, services and systems.
2. Recognize the fact that businesses everywhere understand this language, and that the goods and services they produce based on this language should have the same quality wherever they are made.
3. Understand that standards may come about to achieve a variety of objectives such as ensuring safety and performance, but their basic and essential nature is, that by establishing certain parameters, they provide a common technological foundation for producing goods, services and systems any[every]where.
4. Recognize that it would be hard to understand the efficiency of these standards without the concept of testing. Tests, as the most important element of conformity assessment procedures, refer to different activities involved in ensuring that the products, processes or systems comply with ratified standards. Both standards and tests act as "common confidence-building foundations" for exchanging goods and services between buyers and sellers in the global market.
5. Recognize the different type of standards, either by geography (International, Regional, National) or purpose (Safety, Performance, Quality).
6. Understand the principle of conformity assessment, testing and certification of the product, system or services.
7. Recognize various accreditation and testing organizations and understand the principles behind their functioning.
8. Gain valuable insight as to how to submit a product for certification and how to deal with the certification or approval agency.
9. Be aware of different local, national and international requirements by understanding declared national differences or deviations.

B. Specific Objectives:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of basic electrical safety (fire and shock).
2. Investigate, examine and test the product.
3. Record all findings using [the] forms, checklists and TRFs (Technical Report Forms)

Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
