Intelligent & Integrated Building Control Systems
The Intelligent and Integrated Building Control Systems course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to operate building control systems in a safe, energy efficient, and environmentally conscious manner.
Studies in this subject cover the key concepts of commercial building HVAC controls and the technical side of intelligent buildings and their technologies. An emphasis is placed on automation and smart technologies. The student explores through research the complex elements, latest thinking and developments of these technologies.
One subject credit.
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Describe in detail the differences between open loop and closed loop control systems.
- Describe the common energy types used in commercial building HVAC control systems, and detail how each detects changes in and initiates changes in the controlled variable.
- Describe in detail the three different types of sensing devices used to measure temperature, pressure, and humidity.
- Explain how a pneumatic control system operates
- Describe the ancillary devices required for the safe operation of pneumatic controls.
- Identify the major auxiliary control devices used for safety and for setpoint adjustment.
- List daily, weekly, monthly and periodic maintenance requirements for pneumatic, electric, electronic and Direct Digital control systems.
- Identify the major controlled devices and the criteria for their efficient and safe operation.
- Give a detailed description of the operation of a master-submaster control system.
- Describe the essential components of a computerized control solution of the Honeywell EBI.
- Explain the Indoor Environmental Quality issues that can be addressed by means of building control systems.
- Identify the energy efficiency benefits that may arise from good building management systems, including Building Energy Management Systems.
