BIX442 - Building Inspection

This subject is an introduction to the design, inspection and construction procedures for residential buildings as prescribed in the Ontario Building Code (OBC).   Emphasis is placed on load supporting components of the building and includes; excavation and foundations; floor, wall and roof framing; above grade masonry and fundamental building science.

CPX442 - Concrete Building Practices

This subject introduces the use of reinforced concrete as a construction material. Topics include: an overview of concrete building practices, properties and behaviour of reinforced concrete including tension, compression, flexure, shear; detailing and placement of reinforcing bars in a range of reinforced concrete structural elements and design of simple beams and one way slabs.

CTE442 - Construction Techniques

This subject deals with procedures and practices within the construction industry as it relates to construction management. Topics include quantity takeoffs, estimating, scheduling, and contract practices. The theories and applications introduced in this course will provide students with an appreciation for the basic operations of a project undertaking.

MPP442 - Municipal Practices

This subject covers fundamental concepts of the design of municipal services in subdivisions. Topics include introduction to subdivisions, design of municipal roads, storm and sanitary sewers, and watermain systems. Also, the concepts of lot grading, sewer construction, stormwater management, and pumping stations are introduced.

TEC400 - Technical Communications

This subject introduces technical communication through the analysis of scenarios and sample documents, with opportunities to write audience-centered correspondence and reports. Students learn to edit their documents to achieve accuracy, clarity, conciseness, directness, and coherence. Students also use research and documentation skills to convey technical information, such as instructions and descriptions, in reports and demonstrate effective oral communication and/or collaboration skills.

STW442 - Wood Building Practices

This course gives an overview of wood products in use in the construction industry and the design of beam, column and connections. WoodWorks software is used to supplement manual calculations in sizing simple beams and columns.
