CAB400 - Desktop for Portfolio Development

In this subject, Students will continue the development of their portfolios to a professional level, under the guidance of a professor, in preparation for field placement and job interviews. Students will also use this workshop style class to work on projects assigned in CAB452. In addition, students will also develop further desktop skills using InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator while gaining a working knowledge of pre-press and printing production methods.

Note: This Fourteen week subject will provide the student with one-on-one (Professor and Student) advanced desktop skills, focusing on recreating five of the student?s best examples of their Desktop Publishing Skills, including Pre-press techniques, Typography, Reproduction Scanning and colour correction and image enhancements through the use of third party filters for high resolution output in their personal portfolio.

The student will complete a series of 5 assignments wherein all three software applications (InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe PhotoShop) are utilized and integrated to each other through the CORRECT "Saved File Format".

CAB414 - Interactive and Integrated Media II

This subject is designed to expand the student's knowledge of the emerging area of Interactive Advertising and Interactive Media. Utilizing the fundamentals of interactivity learned in CAB312, the student will translate their knowledge of interactive concepts and apply them to creative executions on real time projects.  Emphasis will be placed on the application and the execution of strategy into powerful creative concepts from different angles including translating print and broadcast strategies into the digital realm and determine which interactive media vehicle is best suited to the message as well as applying them to ?Digital only? campaigns which are supported by social media vehicles.

Through debate, lectures, guest speakers, discussion, and case analysis, students are challenged to make decisions on behalf of a client and their brand.  The student will learn how to develop creative briefs, apply strategy to evolve them into executable campaigns by applying the interactive development process and finding the appropriate mediums to execute within. Working within a team based environment, the students will be further guided by guest speakers and possible real time ?clients? who will direct their skills to apply to the cause for the campaign.

The student will get an overview of developing and understanding interactive briefs, Interactive concept development, design fundamentals for multimedia (web, mobile, social media), mobile execution strategy, in game advertising fundamentals, basic understanding of using content management systems for the development of microsites and basic knowledge of interactive tools such as flash and dream weaver.

CAB425 - Visual Communication II

In this advanced Visual Communication subject the student will continue to develop the skills required by Art Directors while utilizing their concept and copywriting skills. Focus will be placed on taking your creative concepts and layout design to the next level while developing new ideas and visuals for magazine ads, posters, billboards, TV commercials and new media platforms that will persuade someone to buy something utilizing visual images. 
 
The subject explores visual management issues affecting Art Directors in complex projects/campaigns that require the direction of photographers, designers, and illustrators. Students will focus on improving layout and concept abilities within layout, typography, colour theory and desktop skills to prepare your work to become portfolio ready.

CAB444 - Advertising: Concept Development and Strategic Execution

This workshop environment allows for the futher development of skills required for advertising career direction while teaming with students from both the "creative" and "business" streams. Students work in "parallel life" situations of the advertising industry and apply the responsibilities of art directors, copywriters, account management and client relations from within an agency. Case studies are worked through together as team from initial "pitch", strategy development, and conceptual stages to comprehensive presentations to the client. Considered are executing campaigns across all advertising mediums. The results: well planned, powerfully incisive concepts and brilliant execution.

CAB450 - Your Career Launch

This new subject is where the final process of the student's career planning and networking becomes reality. Through direct industry field placement or independent projects, the student becomes part of a company as an active apprentice on-the-job. Students become part of an advertising team - utilizing their academic skills and developing new professional interpersonal and teamwork proficiency. Important feedback is provided by active members of the advertising profession to help the student further scrutinize the potential roles they might play within the industry. This subject is designed to meet the needs of both students who are pursuing Internships and those who are in need or direction for a future career launch.

CAB482 - Creative Development - Direct Response

This subject is designed to allow students in the ACreative Stream@ to further develop their creative skill for direct response. It is an advanced creative development and copywriting course that covers design and writing issues both from a technical as well as a motivational perspective. It will focus on the cardinal rules of direct response creative, the process, the functions and responsibilities of the various individuals in a creative team, the principles and practices of direct marketing for acquisition, retention and loyalty programs from B2B (Business to Business) to NFP (Not-for-Profit) direct response.

FPL408 - Field Placement/Independent Project

Field placement is a self-directed practical subject that provides the student with experience and work within the industry for a minimum of 100 - 150 hours before graduation. Students who do not meet the following requirements will, with the approval of the faculty develop an independent project in a specific area of study.

This subject is a pre-requisite for graduation.
