CSL200 - Advanced Communication Skills for Legal Professionals

This course teaches a variety of communication skills commonly employed by court and public administrators. Students will focus on the development and mastery of grammar, sentence structure, and the rules of punctuation. Given a variety of legal and business correspondence, they will develop detailed proofreading and editing skills which they can then employ in their college courses, and beyond in their professional lives.

EAC150 - College English

College English is an introductory college writing and reading course fundamental to successful college studies. Through a variety of assignments and classroom activities, students will strive to develop the rhetorical and analytical skills essential to their success as communicators in college and upon graduation. Fiction and non-fiction will be a central vehicle for teaching writing.

PRE-REQUISITES: EAC149, EAP500, ESL934, ELI Level 8 or placement based on a Seneca College English Skills Assessment

ICA001 - Introduction to Computers and Applications

In this subject students are introduced to the use of computer systems, a microcomputer operating system (MS Windows), and the following business applications: MS Word for word processing, MS PowerPoint for business presentations, and MS Excel  for spreadsheets. The student will use Windows to effectively operate a personal computer, access various Seneca computer systems, prepare word documents, create business presentations, and develop spreadsheets.

LGL101 - Introduction to Canada's Legal System

This subject introduces students to important elements of the Canadian legal system. Topics include an introduction to the nature of law, the sources of law, the legal system, the court system, the legal professions; the Law Society's Rules of Professional Conduct, the Canadian Constitution, the Charter of Rights, and methods of analysis.

LGL112 - Contracts

This course deals with a fundamentally important area of law - the contract. A contract creates and defines a legal relationship between parties in which each party acquires rights from and assumes obligations towards the other party. Contracts are the foundation of commercial law and are important in family, property and succession law. Breach of contract is a major source of civil litigation.

LGL116 - Torts and Criminal Law

This subject introduces the students to two basic areas of the law, namely torts and criminal law.  In the segment dealing with torts, the student learns about various aspects of tort law, with a particular focus on negligence, liability without fault, tort damages and common statutory torts. In the criminal law segment of the course, the student will be introduced to the substantive law and procedure related to offences under the Criminal Code of Canada.

LXY121 - Automated Law Office

It is essential that law clerks in any legal environment possess excellent computer skills.  This course is designed to develop students' technical abilities and introduce them to the professional standards of document production through the use of word processing skills. Students will learn to transcribe a variety of correspondence and produce documents in accordance with the professional standards upheld by the legal sector. Students will improve their proofreading skills, as well as the accuracy and speed of their typing abilities.  Students will develop practical skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
