Subject Title
Child and Youth Care Practice

Subject Description
This subject serves as an introduction to the practices of Child and Youth Care as it relates to children, youth and families; the setting; and the worker. The students will explore the professional and ethical tasks of a child and youth care worker and the significance of being a member of the professional association. An overview of the types of sectors providing service will be explored as well as the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA), Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), Education Act (EA) and the Mental Health Act (MHA) which govern child and youth care practice. This subject will also explore the use of evidence informed and evidence based practice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

 

  • Analyze the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors Code of Ethics and the rationale for professional participation – Cognitive domain
  • Navigate applicable and relevant parts of the CFSA, YCJA, EA and MHA – Cognitive domain
  • Identify the different Child and Youth Care services available for children, youth and their families – Cognitive domain
  • Describe the various sectors of child and youth care practice – Cognitive domain
  • Compare the similarities and differences in the various settings in which child and youth care practice occurs – Cognitive and Affective domains
  • Reflect on a Youth Court Criminal proceeding – Cognitive and Affective  domains
  • Interpret the definition and elements associated with best practices in the field of child and youth care – Cognitive domain

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
