CYW376 - Human Sexuality

The study of human sexuality and gender identity is an important learning experience for any student entering the human service profession. This subject will study the variety of ways in which sexuality and/or gender can have an impact on people?s lives. The subject material will acquaint the student with the knowledge and understanding of this area necessary to present to clients in the field. Students will learn to recognize age related norms and be able to apply these observations to programming techniques. They will also become familiar with the teaching techniques necessary in this area for all age groups to educate and facilitate discussions about sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression.

CYW502 - Family Work in CYC Practice

The aim of this subject is to analyze family dynamics from a systemic and developmental viewpoint. It will cover systems theory, family structure, development, communication, transition, history and culture. This subject will deal with developing a context that will assist the CYW in their work with families. The student will develop and practice skills that facilitate parent competence and involvement of all family members in their own problem solving. This subject will specifically address the following topics: The role of the CYW in families, counselling techniques that support a collaborative partnership with parents and developing plans to help parents promote positive behaviour, home support and running parenting groups

CYW503 - Child and Adolescent Mental Health Disorders

This course offers an overview of mental health disorders particularly prevalent in children and youth. The course covers definitions of mental health and illness, the prevalence of mental illness in Canada, symptoms and treatment strategies for attachment disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. Students will also be active in researching resources for children, youth and their families dealing with the above mental health issues.

CYW547 - Field Placement Seminar

This is the fourth of five seminars related to the field placement. This seminar will also be offered concurrently with the subject Field Placement IV. Seminar is a forum for third-year students to integrate placement experiences with classroom learning. Common and recurring themes and issues related to the student?s field placement experience will be identified and prioritized for discussion. These recurring themes and issues will be explored through class discussions and activities. A primary focus of this seminar is to ensure that students are practicing safely and ethically within their placement setting. Students will be expected to take on greater responsibility during seminar classes and drawing upon their previous placement experience and course work.

CYW557 - Field Placement

Field Work Placement is a laboratory for students in the placement setting. The student learns the philosophy, function, procedures, strengths and limitations of a Child and Youth Work agency or school setting. Students have the opportunity in the supervised placement setting to practice Child and Youth Work Skills learned. In addition, she/he learns to become part of a service team and learns to provide support and services to meet the needs of children, youth and families serviced by the agency or school.
