DBS201 - Introduction to Database Design and SQL
This subject introduces students to relational database design and SQL (Structured Query Language) used with relational databases. Students will be introduced to relational and object oriented models with a focus on the relational model and its operators. Students will be presented with a methodology for relational database design using Entity Relationship Diagrams and normalization of data. Students will be introduced to a subset of SQL using IBM's DB2 on the iSeries platform. An overview of the functions of the Database Management System (DBMS) and of a Database Administrator (DBA) will also be presented.
IBC233 - iSeries Business Computing
IBC233 introduces commercial and business information technology on the IBM iSeries server. Students will work in an object based architecture using Client Access and Websphere Development Studio Client for iSeries to create business applications. These applications will be developed using the built in DB2 relational database, OS/400 commands and Control Language programming, Query/400 data reporting, interactive screens, and webfacing. The Integrated File System, which provides Windows and UNIX file serving, along with desktop connectivity tools will be investigated to demonstrate the heterogeneous systems support available only on the iSeries platform.
INT222 - Internet I - Internet Fundamentals
This subject introduces students to Internet architecture and software development principles, using the World Wide Web as the system example. After successfully completing the subject, a student will be able to design and create web pages for web browsers, while applying knowledge of HTML5 technologies.
Students begin by learning JavaScript, the programming language of the Web. Then, the Document Object Model (DOM) is studied, and with it, documents that use the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to define its structure and content. To affect and modify the appearance and formatting of a document, students learn and apply the foundations of the Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) language. Throughout this progression of topics, JavaScript is continually used to access and modify the content and appearance of documents through the DOM interface.
OOP244 - Introduction to Object Oriented Programming
This subject introduces the student to object-oriented programming. The student learns to build reusable objects, encapsulate data and logic within a class, inherit one class from another and implement polymorphism. This subject uses the C++ programming language exclusively and establishes a foundation for learning system analysis and design and more advanced concepts as implemented in languages such as C++, Java, C# and Objective-C.
