Advanced Reading and Writing Skills
Subject Description
This course is a continuation of EAP130. It focuses on refining the essay by developing awareness of audience and the use of appropriate registers. The course also focuses on reading strategies and comprehension. In addition, this course also introduces the students to the research essay. Students are expected to be familiar with advanced grammar structures in order to edit for grammatical accuracy at this level.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Write detailed point-form outlines that are organized and sequenced appropriately for the type of essay written
2. Produce 350-500 word five-paragraph essays in various rhetorical modes: opinion/argument, comparison/contrast and cause/effect
3. Read articles and short readings: paraphrase, summarize content, detect inferences, make predictions
4. Communicate effectively in spoken English through class discussions and participation regarding concepts learned
5. Demonstrate knowledge of rudimentary research skills and an understanding of MLA format so as to produce paraphrased notes
6. Develop an awareness of the kinds of information in the dictionary skills and advance independent learning
7. Use context and knowledge of word usage to aid in understanding new vocabulary
