In this subject, students examine the development of school-age children and integrate this knowledge as they learn skills in planning, implementing and evaluating programming in group care settings.

ECY311 - Philosophy of Early Childhood Education Seminar

This course includes an exploration of different educational traditions, in order to understand the philosophical foundations of Early Childhood Education. It also involves the examination and questioning of our own beliefs about education and the "creation" of our own personal philosophies.

ECY322 - Curriculum Seminar

This is a methods subject which focuses on curriculum development. Emphasis is placed on program planning and supervisory techniques within the children's environment.Students with knowledge of child development and basic programming skills will perfect a range of observation techniques and use these techniques in their practice teaching. They will, through observing children closely, be able to assess children's interests and abilities and predict responses. Using this information, students can then plan programs which will involve the children in developmentally appropriate and positive experiences.

ECY343 - Psychology of Interpersonal Communications

Interpersonal communications is an experiential course that acknowledges individual and human diversity. As participants engage in the processes of intrapersonal (self reflection) and interpersonal (interactive) communication in a safe environment, increased acceptance and understanding of others is anticipated. This course will consist of two modules with their own specific objectives.

EFP201 - School Age Field Placement

For two half days, (after school hours) per week, students will take part in a school age field placement. The student will focus on planning and programming a range of activities appropriate for the children in their placement.

NOTE: 
If at any time a student jeopardizes the emotional well-being, health or safety of a child through actions or behaviours and the supervising professor determines that the student is not capable of the rquired level of independent functining, the student may be withdrawn from placement and may fail the course.  The student may also be asked to leave the program.

EFP322 - Preschool Field Placement III

For two half days or one full day per week throughout the semester, students take part in an early childhood field placement. They're expected to act as responsible members of the teaching team in this setting. Each student must demonstrate skills in: appropriate program planning, facilitation of learning, problem solving, positive behaviour guidance, and effective communication with children, teachers, parents and other adults.
