American Short Story

Subject Description
This course examines the very popular genre of American Short Fiction. The student will read a good number of short stories from a variety of Contemporary North American writers. The student will learn to recognize some of the generic elements as well as identify the variant attitudes existing among the diverse groups of writers. The student will exercise critical reading skills in order to analyze and discuss the obvious and less obvious use of symbol, metaphor and analogy developed in the short pages of the stories. Students will also read stories with various North American dialects, and recognize a variety of themes according to social and political contexts of the writers.

Credit Status
This literature course is for Seneca College Fire Protection students pursuing degrees with the University of Cincinnati, and it is offered in partnership with English 384 at the University of Cincinnati.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a good understanding of critical concepts for the analysis of the style and content of literary short fiction.

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills by articulating personal views within a framework of textual evidence and critical terminology.

3. Produce accurate, coherent, well-written evaluative/analytical essays.

4. Write about American short stories to identify, define, and describe essential characteristics of contemporary American literature.

5. Integrate knowledge of comparative national literatures with American literature.

6. Prepare critical thinking and analytical writing skills for success in undergraduate university.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
