Fire Safety Inspections

Subject Description
Focus is on conducting fire safety inspections in various types of occupancies (industrial, mercantile, residential) to note fire hazards and faults related to sprinkler/alarm systems. Emphasis is on the application of relevant provincial codes and communication of the results of the inspection. This subject has only one section: Fire Safety Inspections

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

- describe the purpose and practices of fire prevention and fire inspection
- describe briefly the history of fire safety and advancement in the field today
- describe the parts of the Ontario Fire Code and the Ontario Building Code which
apply to fire safety
- identify fire prevention related organizations/associations
- describe the methods to interpret and apply municipal ordinances, by-laws and
regulations that govern fire prevention and protection
- define classification of hazards
- describe the principles on which codes and standards are based
- describe common fire hazards
- describe special hazards
- identify and prioritize types of occupancies requiring fire safety inspections
- identify four general categories of fire protection equipment/system
- describe the function, components and operations of standpipe systems
- identify the four categories of special extinguishing systems, and describe the
function, components and operations of special extinguishing systems
- identify the components of a fire alarm system
- describe the function, components and operation of four types of sprinkler systems

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
