GRA210 - Graphic Design I

In this CORE subject, students will explore the foundations of graphic design as applied to print material. Students will continue to develop their page layout skills by an introduction and application of a variety of grid systems. Special consideration will be given to the application of design elements and their corresponding organizational principles as well as the interaction and relationship between type and image.


Pre-requisites: GRA 170, GRA 180, GRA 160, GRA 120, GRA 130 and SCA 266

GRA220 - Software Training II

The focus of this subject is to develop the skills necessary to electronically create type and pictorial images and assemble these components into a page layout using appropriate software.

GRA230 - Typography II

The subject continues to develop students' skills in the use and application of text type as both communication and design elements. Students begin will begin to explore the relationship between text and display type in print applications. The students will also begin to address the emotive, aesthetic and communicative value of the combination and contrast of text and display type.

GRA241 - History of Graphic Design I

A multidisciplinary survey of graphic design from the industrial age to the 1920's. This course explores the impact of industrial technology upon visual communication.

GRA271 - Design Thinking II

This course is designed to foster a personal approach to conceptual problem solving while putting into practise the seven steps involved in the design thinking process. The design process engages a high degree of creativity, in a manner that is managed and directed by the process itself, to produce viable and practical solutions to design problems. While creativity in design is very important, design is an activity that serves both economic and creative goals. The design process helps to ensure that a design satisfies all such requirements and conversely generates a number of creative solutions. Student will learn how to utilize various methods such as research, brainstorming, mind-mapping, focus groups and creative exercises in the pursuit of innovative solutions.

SCA266 - Photography I

In this subject, students will learn how to use photography from a graphic design perspective. This includes incorporating the traditional principles of contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity, as well as rhythm, unity, balance and emphasis. Students will learn the importance of professional communication skills, such as constructive creative critiquing, as well as developing an effective workflow practise.
 
They will meet professional photographers from industry, including Seneca graduates, and go on a day-long field trip to the Toronto Zoo to put achieved skills into practise. They will learn to understand that photography has close to a 200-year history, and be exposed to famous photographers from the 19th and 20th centuries.
 
A series of group projects will assist their group work skills, and develop related communication skills.
