Subject Title
Meetings and Incentives

Subject Description
This course will focus on the planning of major events including meetings, conferences, conventions, exhibitions and incentive travel programs. These events are a major source of income in the tourism industry and today's attendees are educated consumers with high expectations of the services provided. This course will give you the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to participate in the planning of these exciting and complex events both from an inbound and outbound tourism perspective.

Credit Status
HPL 350 is a professional option required to graduate from the two year Tourism and Travel Diploma Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Describe the scope of the meetings and incentives industries, including factors influencing growth and the economic impact of

2. Define and use meeting and incentive terminology/vocabulary

3. Compare and contrast meeting, convention and incentive style events

4. Identify Canada's current audiences for meetings, conventions and incentive programs

5. State the MNE's of the corporate event planner as well as the organizations sponsoring meetings and incentive events

6. Describe the steps involved in the design and planning of a successful incentive program including program funding methods and qualification approaches

7. Describe the planner's role for arrangement of meeting and incentive style events through field trip and experiential hands-on learning

8. Summarize the role of the sponsoring organization in marketing, contracting, servicing, budgeting and forecasting of meeting and incentive style events

9. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the event planner in managing and coordinating vendor contracts for a variety of services including AV, lighting and keynote speakers

10. Describe the skills and behaviors essential for employment in meeting and incentive planning positions and consider your own interest and suitability for these positions

11. Apply interpersonal communication skills while working with colleagues and/or a client in a meeting or event setting

12. With a small group, plan and create a proposal and sell a concept for a either a convention or incentive style event that involves the analysis of client MNE's, choice of destination and venue, as well as program design, contracting and funding for the event

13. In addition to these learning outcomes, the student will have opportunities to achieve generic skills learning outcomes, which are the same for each diploma program at Seneca and other community colleges in Ontario. A list of these outcomes is provided at the end of the course outline

14. Use correct business etiquette and adhere to professional standards of dress, hygiene and grooming.
