Transborder Procedures

Subject Description
This course introduces students to practical hands-on knowledge of various tariff reliefs. Emphasis will be placed on North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) rules of origin determinations as well as United States of America (USA), Canadian and Mexican government requirements for import clearances classified by sector and country of origin.

Credit Status
One credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the functions of the World Trade Organization and the World Customs Organization.
  2. Describe the opportunity for tariff relief on goods imported on a temporary basis.
  3. Understand and apply the principles of bonded warehouse entries.
  4. Describe the advantages of CSA (Customs Self Assessment), Partners in Protection (PIP), Free and Secure Trade (FAST) & ACI (Advance Commercial Information).
  5. Discuss the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) penalty system in Canada.
  6. Apply the principles of NAFTA rules of origin.
  7. Explain the basic rules for importing goods into the USA, Mexico and Canada.
