Subject Title
International Freight Handling

Subject Description
This subject will examine modes of transportation in terms of how they function individually and how they interconnect both nationally and internationally. The course will explore ocean freight, intermodalism, freight rates, economies of each mode, dangerous goods, conditions of carriage, legal liability of carriers, Canadian transportation regulatory environment, and marine insurance. The physical movement of goods across national boundaries will be the major focus of this subject.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the movement of goods from points within Canada to international destinations.
  2. Analyse and determine the best mode of transportation for various products to a multitude of international destinations.
  3. Negotiate the most appropriate freight rates from carriers.
  4. Distinguish break-even points for LCL and FCL ocean freight shipments.
  5. Describe intermodalism.
  6. Cost freight movements from door to port of destination, port to port, port to door and door to door.
  7. Discuss the legal liability of carriers.
  8. List and describe transportation regulations.
  9. Describe and identify dangerous goods (DG) regulations, and recognize and respond appropriately to DG symbols.
  10. Describe the role of and services provided by freight intermediaries, and how to utilize their services cost efficiently.
  11. Source marine insurance and calculate premiums.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
