Subject Title
Placement and Work Skills

Subject Description
This subject prepares students for their field placements and introduces the library workplace. Behaviours and attitudes are stressed. Activities for finding and applying for employment in libraries are begun. Resumes, interviews and cover letters are reviewed with a resume for the first field placement being prepared. Also included in this subject are customer service and special audiences in libraries.

Credit Status
This is a credit subject applicable towards the Library and Information Technician Diploma Program offered through the School of Legal and Public Administration and the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Explain duties, activities and evaluation of field placements.

2. Explain preparation for placement interviews.

3. Explain methods of learning new tasks and demonstrate the ability to accept constructive criticism.

4. Describe workplace values and explain work behaviour expectations in Canadian libraries.

5. Explain customer service expectations in libraries.

6. Describe the various special audiences in libraries and their service needs.

7. Prepare an employment resume and cover letter.

8. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assignments as scheduled.

ESSENTIAL EMPLOYABILITY

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken, visual forms that fulfills the purpose and the needs of the audience.

2. Respond to written, spoken, or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication.

3. Use a variety of thinking skills to anticipate and solve problems.

4. Locate, select, organize, and document information from a variety of sources.

5. Analyze, evaluate, and apply relevant information from a variety of sources.

6. Show respect for the diverse opinions, values, belief systems and contributions of others.

7. Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals.

8. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete projects.

9. Take responsibility for one's own actions, decisions, and consequences.
