Reference Process

Subject Description
Students learn to perform reference. Some of the numerous activities performed by the students include conducting reference interviews, and producing bibliographies and other tools to assist library users.

Credit Status
This is a credit subject towards the Library and Information Technician Diploma program offered through the School of Legal and Public Administration and the Faculty of Continuing Education.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Prepare bibliographies.

2. Create bibliographic citations following a style manual.

3. Provide an overview of reference.

4. Describe specifics of responding to subject requests.

5. Perform basic reference processes, including conducting reference interviews.

6. Discuss influences on reference activities based on libraries' policies and procedures.

7. Perform variations of the basic reference processes, including remote reference.

8. Demonstrate an attitude of professionalism, as evidenced by the an ability to meet deadlines, complete assignments and perform tests and in-class assignments as scheduled.

ESSENTIAL EMPLOYABILITY

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken, visual forms that fulfills the purpose and the needs of the audience.

2. Respond to written, spoken, or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication.

3. Apply a systematic approach to solve problems.

4. Use a variety of thinking skills to anticipate and solve problems.

5. Locate, select, organize, and documnet information using appropriate technology and information systems.

6. Analyze, evaluate, and apply relevant information from a variety of sources.

7. Show respect for the diverse opinions, values, belief systems and contributions of others.

8. Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals.

9. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete projects.

10. Take responsibility for one's own actions, decisions, and consequences.
