Subject Description
With the ever-expanding use of the internet, and distributed computing there has been an increased need for information security at all levels within organizations. This course provides a technical overview of current security concerns faced by programmers, technical support staff and end users in today's data communications environments. Current security solutions that address issues such as Authentication and Authorization, Data Integrity, Infrastructure Protection Privacy/Confidentiality, Non-repudiation and Availability of Service will be examined through a combination of lectures and hands-on labs.

Credit Status
1 credit in the CPA program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

•     Understand the vocabulary of data communications security technologies
•     Demonstrate the basic steps to developing a security plan
•     Apply skills and techniques to real-life networking lab scenarios
•     Identify security issues inherent in programming, and be able to implement best programming practices that address these security issues
•     Identify security problems within the scope of data communications networks, and recommend solutions
•     Understand, define, and explain security technologies concepts and applications to both software developers and to non-technical personnel
