Information Technology

Subject Description
IT is the fastest growing sector in the market with new technologies emerging each year. This course explores the trends in technology that affect technical communicators. The course analyzes IT concepts, terminology, methodologies, and best practices used in different industries and how to use these practices within the Documentation Development Life Cycle. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on simulations, research, and presentations, students develop a broad perspective on innovative technologies such as AI and chatbots that shape our world today.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Explain concepts, terminology, and methodologies used in technical communication and information technology industries.
  2. Demonstrate digital citizenship and social responsibility when using technology and communicating to global audiences.
  3. Examine how emerging technologies create new ethical debates for society and technical communicators.
  4. Illustrate the impact of technology on how we connect and collaborate in the IT workplace.
  5. Propose solutions to technological issues using innovation and critical thinking skills.
  6. Compare the documentation development life cycle within companies that use different software development methodologies.
  7. Relate the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders and product team members within an IT organization.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
