Mental Health & Addiction
This course is divided into two distinct but interrelated sections: 1) Mental Health; 2) Addiction. The course will provide students with the fundamental concepts in menatal health and addictions. Furthermore students will be able with this knowledge to critically analyze the factors contributing to issues of mental health and substance use; understand fundamental concepts in mental health and addiction; learn terminology and the range of diagnosis; understand the impact of stigma that hinders seeking help and/or access to services; distinguish gender differences in responding to psycho-social stressors; learn about harm reduction strategies; and identify the existing service delivery, their gaps and overlaps for the purpose of referral.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

-Define the concept of mental health and addiction
-Demonstrate an understanding of post-migration and resettlement stressors that increase the vulnerability of immigrants to mental health and addiction issues
-Identify economic, social, political and personal consequences that mental health and addiction may cause on immigrants
-Demonstrate a rudimentary understanding of key concepts and terms in the mental health and addiction field
-Identify factors that may prevent immigrants from accessing mental health and addiction resources
-Apply an anti-oppression analysis in identifying a community's strength and resiliency while dealing with the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction issues
-Distinguish among harm reduction strategies and abstinence
-Build knowledge about appropriate resources for referral to comprehensive care
-Illustrate how to work with various immigrant community members and partner agencies to ensure accessibility to information and referral
