Rita Shelton Deverell lends her voice to Professor James Cullingham’s latest documentary.
Rita Shelton Deverell, a member of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame,
is the latest contributor to In Search of Blind Joe Death - The Saga of John Fahey.
The former Canadian television broadcaster and social activist, who was one of the founders
of Vision TV, visited Seneca@York recently to lend her voice to Professor James Cullingham’s
latest documentary.
Fahey is considered by many rock historians as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Although he never became a household name, the “father of American Primitive Guitar” served
as a great influence on many guitar-wielding rock bands.
James first became aware of Fahey almost 30 years ago when he was working on the CBC’s
Sunday Morning radio program.
Production on the full-length documentary started in 2010 and is expected to be completed later
this year.
Just like his previous films, a number of Senecans are working with James on this project. Included
among them are Professor Igal Hecht, who is serving as the director of photography, and Journalism
graduate Jessica Cullingham, the film’s editor.
An animated sequence for the film is currently being developed at the School of Creative Arts and
Animation by students Bianca de Guzman, Alice Ho, and Min Zhou under the guidance of their
Professors Ben McEvoy and Barney Wornoff. In addition, Journalism students Violetta Holl and
Alex Trottier are serving as the film’s official interns.
