Program Description

The Co-op Apprenticeship Diploma program is designed for applicants who are committed to becoming Early Childhood Educators (ECEs). You will be able to complete the full course of study in four straight semesters or 16 months. In addition, graduates will have the tools they need if they wish to begin their own childcare related business. Strong reading and writing skills are required and applicants with experience working in the field will be given preference. Please note that the application process includes an English language assessment and an entrance interview. Students who successfully complete each semester with a 2.5 GPA are eligible for a renewable scholarship. In-school training includes instruction in:

  • child development
  • health, safety and nutrition
  • infant/toddler, preschool and school-age methods
  • philosophy
  • interpersonal communications
  • administration
  • children with special needs
  • bias free education

Business related training includes instruction in:

  • Digital technology
  • Business communication
  • Setting up you own Nursery and After School program

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a majority of senior credits at the College Preparation (C), University Preparation (U) or University/College Preparation (M) level
  • Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U)

Applicant Selection:

  • Applicant grades in prerequisite subjects may be used as a basis for the selection of candidates.
  • Applicant must be working in the child care field and their employer has to be willing to sign them as apprentices and have them continue working part time while they go to school.
  • Applicants will be required to attend a pre-admission information session.
  • Applicants will be required to demonstrate solid reading and writing skills through an assessment.
  • Applicants will be asked to attend an interview.

Required:

  • Current immunization report and report of chest x–ray or tuberculin skin test. Use the attached form. Please take the form to your family doctor and have them complete and sign it.
  • A valid Standard First Aid Certificate (16 hours).
  • A valid C.P.R. "C" Certificate.
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check.
    Note: applicants living in the City of Toronto can expect to wait a minimum of 10 weeks to receive a Police Check. Use the attached form to apply a minimum of 10 weeks before the start of school. You must print this form on 11x14 paper, if you don’t it will be returned to you! Complete the top portion of the form with your personal information. Sign, date and mail with a CERTIFIED CHEQUE or MONEY ORDER for $16.95 to Toronto Police Services, 40 College St. Toronto ON, M5G 2J3

Your Career

As an Early Childhood Educator, you'll be prepared for a fulfilling career working with children from infancy to 12 years. Your career may include employment in child care centres, after-school programs, nursery schools, parent co-operative centres, private home child care, some centres for children with special needs, and in a kindergarten in the elementary school system.

In-School Training

Child Development Practitioner apprentices are required to take 22 modules of in-school training. In-school training includes instruction in:

  • child development
  • health, safety and nutrition
  • infant/toddler, preschool and school-age methods
  • philosophy
  • interpersonal communications
  • administration
  • children with special needs
  • bias free education
