First in Canada, new Seneca program offers students unique opportunity to earn degree
Seneca’s innovative bachelor’s degree provides liberal arts education to complement applied and professional studies
Toronto, August 15, 2012 – Seneca is offering students an opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree through a unique program that is the first of its kind in Canada.
“The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies provides an innovative pathway for students to build on the education they've already received at colleges or universities,” said Seneca President David Agnew. “It complements the applied skills and knowledge students already have with a strong liberal arts education that can further support their career goals."
“This is the first program of this kind in any Canadian postsecondary institution, and the first offered by a college in North America,” said Michael Skolnik, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto.
By recognizing prior education, this program provides a unique entryway back to school for those seeking a bachelor’s degree. It can allow college graduates — especially those in programs that may not have as many credential options as others — to build on their diplomas to earn a degree.
For example, a graduate of an Ontario college two-year diploma program with a 3.0 grade point average would enter the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program with 45 credits toward a degree, or the equivalent of one-and-a-half years of study.
“The degree will also be attractive to those who didn’t finish university,” said Henry Decock, Associate Vice President, Academic - Research and Planning. “They too can apply their credits and earn a degree in less time with less expense than students often face going back to school.”
Beginning in September, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies students will receive a solid grounding in communication, humanities, mathematics, science and social science subjects and career-related courses. The program will also include a co-op component and a strong emphasis on research.
