Seneca establishing first Ontario Centre dedicated to research in student mobility

Seneca becomes a hub for ongoing research in student movement within postsecondary education

Toronto, July 16, 2014 – Seneca is establishing the first Ontario research centre focused on how and why students transfer between postsecondary institutions and programs – an important first step in building easier and better pathways between universities and colleges.

The Centre for Research in Student Mobility will investigate student movement within postsecondary education provincially, nationally and internationally to help inform policy, program and pathway development, student advising, student support services and institutional partnerships.

“As the Ontario leader in pathways, Seneca knows the importance of flexible learning and educational options that enable students to move between programs and institutions,” says Dr. Joy McKinnon, Seneca’s Vice-President Academic. “This groundbreaking Centre will give us insight into student movement in postsecondary education and help us to create pathways to support students in the best ways possible.”

Several research projects are already underway at Seneca, including:

  • Provincial analysis of existing data using the Ontario graduate Key Performance Indicator survey;
  • Multi-institutional analysis of international student movement between Ontario colleges and universities; and,
  • Institutional analysis of student movement focusing on first-generation and mature students.

“The Centre will be a source of original research in the field of student mobility and a resource for other research being published on this subject”, says Dr. Henry Decock, Associate Vice-President Academic Partnerships and Principal Researcher for the Centre. “We want Seneca to be the first stop when researchers and policy makers are investigating issues related to student mobility.”

Seneca is Ontario’s leader in credit transfer and college-university collaboration, helping hundreds of students each year pursue further education.
