Introduction to Computers and Applications
In this subject students are introduced to a microcomputer operating system (MS Windows Vista), and the following business applications: MS Word 2007 for word processing, MS PowerPoint 2007 for business presentations, and MS Excel 2007 for spreadsheets.
Students will use Windows Vista to effectively operate a microcomputer, access various Seneca computer systems, and use Office 2007 to prepare word documents, create business presentations, and develop spreadsheets.

Introducing Libraries
In this subject students gain an overview of libraries and achieve an understanding of the major types of libraries, library roles, functional areas within libraries, library collections and the categories of staff.
The ethical and professional framework of librarianship is introduced and the historical context of libraries is explored.
LIT152 -
Library Catalogues and Bibliographies
This subject introduces bibliographic information for books and serials.
Students learn to search library catalogues both for items and for topics, and to use various library catalogue software.
They are introduced to electronic formats including search options, operators and display options.
Students also learn to create bibliographic citations following a style manual and to prepare a bibliography.

Basic Library Skills
Students learn to perform basic tasks performed in all types of libraries.
With respect to materials, these include processing, storage, shelving, weeding, basic book repair and preservation and conservation.
Also included are security, equipment, supplies and filing.

Computers in Libraries
This subject introduces databases and networks.
Students learn to use Microsoft Access and to create web pages using HTML.
The introduction to networks includes the Internet.

Derivative Cataloguing
Students learn standard derivative cataloguing for print and automated environments, as well as coding of records using MARC format.
Authority records also are covered.

Acquisitions
This subject introduces the practices used by libraries when buying books, subscribing to serials and acquiring government documents.
Verifying pre-order information, choosing appropriate sources for acquisition, and ordering and receiving are studied along with additional content about bookkeeping, publishing and collection development.

Circulation and Interlibrary Loan
Students learn to perform circulation and interlibrary loan operations in libraries.
Written communications and telephone skills are also studied.

Ready Reference
This subject prepares the prospective library and information technician to answer ready reference questions using typical resources found in a reference collection and using Internet resources.

Database Searching I
This subject continues database searching introduced in first semester subjects.
Its emphasis is search systems available from companies such as ProQuest and EBSCO, and periodical indexes, especially general periodical indexes.
